Colour us impressed with the level of detail that went into this gorgeous wedding, it’s so full of texture, colour and personality! Despite the traditional Peranakan-themed space, the newlyweds managed to weave a variety of modern touches into the décor so that everything came together beautifully. Many thanks to Jenny Sun Photography for capturing all the stylish details.

Reuben and Ji-An: “There were so many moments that were our favourites. For Reuben, it was the exchanging of vows and his piano performance. For Ji-An, the speeches, Reuben’s performance, and the father-daughter dance were really memorable. When we were planning our wedding with Hui Wen from Soiree Lab, there were so many activities that we wanted to do, and we were glad to have been able to do them all. Each activity had its own special moments that we got to share with our friends and family.

“We knew from the get-go that we wanted a small, intimate wedding. It was also a time to reunite with our family and friends who live abroad. We looked for venues that would allow us to have a reception and after party, plus accommodate our guests that were staying for the weekend. When we stepped into Seven Terraces, it ticked all the boxes. The courtyard was perfect for the wedding ceremony, and dinner at the Kebaya restaurant presented itself as a unique experience. We wanted a modern wedding as opposed to a traditional-themed one, and that’s where Hui Wen and her team brought their magic.”

Hui Wen of Soirée Lab: “Ji-An and Reuben’s wedding was our favourite kind – intimate, personal, and just layered with so many details. The guests were in for a treat, from the moment they received watercolour wedding invitations along with a hand-painted map of Penang with the couple’s top food recommendations. Reuben is a music producer, and he composed a special version of ‘Canon in D’ for Ji-An’s walk-in, where he played the violin. It was definitely a swoon-worthy moment.

“Even though it rained heavily before the ceremony, everything turned out perfectly, and the couple even got some beautifully moody and romantic shots in the rain. We always encourage couples to take things in their stride and remember that as long as you are marrying each other, that’s 100% of the battle won.

“During cocktail hour, guests sipped on His and Hers cocktails and nibbled on Nyonya kuih while listening to a live guzheng performance. For the reception, soft floral displays took centrestage, made even more magical by the dancing candlelight from ombre grey candles. The ceremony arch was transformed into a photo backdrop with the addition of a neon light, and Reuben dedicated a surprise performance of ‘Wonderful Tonight’ on the grand piano to the guests and his new bride. To wrap up the night, the couple played a special video featuring special moments of all their guests, before kicking off an epic dance party with sparklers!”

Tips from the bride: “Instagram and Pinterest will be your best friend and source of inspiration, but don’t obsess over it, especially if you already have a clear idea of what you want. It’s your big day so make sure to have fun! There were a few hiccups at our wedding, but we trusted Hui Wen (our wedding planner), so we were able to enjoy ourselves.”
