In 2018, fate (and a Marvel Superhero Exhibition) brought Carmen and Yansun together in Melbourne. Yansun, who rarely visited the city, was looking for company to attend the exhibition. A mutual friend suggested Carmen, and although their first meeting wasn’t the smoothest—he arrived 30 minutes late and ordered messy nachos—they ended up having a great time.

From the moment guests stepped into the foyer, they were immersed in an interactive pre-event experience featuring seven themed stations, including photobooths and a custom cocktail bar. But the real spectacle was inside the main ballroom—a dazzling retro wonderland that paid homage to the golden era of disco.

The ceiling was draped with cascading fringes in electric shades of pink, orange, and purple, while oversized disco balls cast shimmering light across the space. Metallic accents, mirrored surfaces, and a reflective aisle enhanced the vibrant, high-energy aesthetic. Guest tables featured sequinned linens, pastel floral arrangements, and disco-themed photobooks where guests could store their instant booth keepsakes, further enhancing the nostalgic theme. Even the couple’s wedding stationaries embraced a playful 80s-inspired design with cassette tape motifs and neon typography.

The evening kicked off with an energetic performance that set the tone for the night. A performance nearly nine months in the making, their first dance started as a romantic routine before morphing into a high-energy, theatrical show filled with humor, intricate choreography, and bold moves that left guests in awe. Following which, Yansun and Carmen made their entrance with an unexpected twist, Yansun serenaded the crowd with Perfect by Ed Sheeran while walking arm-in-arm with his mother, an emotional moment that left many in tears. Carmen then made her way down the aisle with her father before joining Yansun on stage.

From the outset, the wedding was anything but ordinary. Key highlights included: a guests dance-off where six guests competed for the “Best Outfit” award; heartfelt poetry reading and speeches. Finally, the groom’s solo performance of September by Earth, Wind & Fire, launched the afterparty and kept the dance floor packed until late into the night.

One of the most memorable touches of the night was the couple’s handcrafted cocktail menu. Working with a mixologist, they designed five unique drinks, each representing different aspects of their personalities. From a Caipirinha and Gin & Gula Melaka fusion to a playful Chardonnay & Pineapple Ice Cream concoction, the menu catered to every guest’s taste. As the night went on, espresso test tube shots named Before You Go-Go kept the energy high.

Yansun (@shootingsun_media) and Carmen’s wedding wasn’t just a celebration—it was an experience. Every detail, from the decor to the entertainment, was curated to transport guests back in time, ensuring an unforgettable night filled with love, music, and pure disco magic.
