For most photographers, going outside to take photographs is what keeps their creative fire going. With Covid-19 putting us all in lockdown, however, the wedding photography community has been compelled to find new ways to hone their skills. Ultimately, it’s all about composition, inspiration, and going by your gut feeling, right? Building on ND of Sanren Studio’s Zoom photoshoot experiment, Louis Gan of Louis Gan Photography got in on the action too, playing with lights and filters for his photos of Asther and Wilson.

Louis: “The idea of taking on this virtual photography challenge came from some outstanding photographer buddies of mine, Kai Picture and Pixioo from Singapore, and Sanren Studio’s ND. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of our clients have postponed their wedding ceremonies. As a means of keeping our skills sharp, I decided to give virtual photography a go. I even got ND to assist by taking a set of photographs of myself with my girlfriend. I sought his assistance mainly because I knew how experienced and talented he was. For this virtual challenge, I studied his photos extensively.

“The whole process from planning to the shoot was only two days. I asked Wilson and Asther to participate in the shoot as an impromptu request, and they immediately accepted. I did my homework by doing some research on YouTube and experimenting on some shots that I had taken with my girlfriend. The next day, we jumped straight into the photoshoot.

“To be frank, I went into the shoot with no concept whatsoever. Everything was spontaneous. Getting the angles right was quite a challenge because you’re not physically there to set up the shot. So you’re directing the couple through video to try and get them to pose accordingly. The shooting process was quite tedious but at the same time a lot of fun.”
