As they pledge their lives to each other as man and wife, their union solemnised before God and loved ones, this couple’s hard work in putting their DIY wedding together is a beautiful and telling story of how they approach their marriage.
Their priority was the venue as both of them love the outdoors and wanted a place that had both indoor and outdoor options. They chose to go bohemian for the occasion, the casual vibes complementing the serene surroundings of Janda Baik. The uplifting colour palette of green, lavender grey, and copper gave the already splendid venue a touch of their personality. Thank you, Bitesize Visuals, for the great captures!
The bride shared: “We loved everything about it. From the personalised song tributes and poems, and my husband’s tear-jerking speech to friends who flew in from overseas and my sister’s hilariously dangling falsies, everything culminated in a most memorable day for us.”
A tight budget meant that everything had to be DIY, from spray painting table decorations and cleaning thrifted glassware to handmaking the waterfall paper cone backdrop, as well as the large amount of macramé jars, and ceremony and dinner arches. They even used their 20-odd year old encyclopaedias for the table centrepieces!
“We tried to be as creative and resourceful as we could, and upcycled wherever possible. But what we saved in currency we had to pay in effort. We were working late nights right up till the event itself and transported literally a house-load full of decorations to the venue. If not for the army of helpers we had on the day, nothing would have been set up in time for the wedding.”
Tips from the bride: “If you’re planning to DIY, you need an ‘army’ of helpers. We were rather too ambitious in wanting to do everything ourselves, and that wasn’t possible! My sister was a real champ. She slogged hard and worked right up till the eleventh hour to put the finishing touches.
“Begin very early on and keep things simple but impactful. Don’t underestimate the amount of tedious work to be done, even with ‘simple’ concepts. It would really help if you gathered a reliable team of friends and family for mass production work. We had that ‘production line’ going when creating our waterfall paper cone backdrop.
“Pinterest is fantastic for getting inspiration but don’t let it set your expectations too high. You’ll have to learn to be flexible with your choices because not everything can be achieved or will turn out as expected. So just be open to other possibilities and learn to find alternatives.”
