You can’t go wrong with a rustic chic theme when the venue is Tanarimba at Janda Baik. The beautiful surroundings, wooden columns and lush greenery are more than enough, and all you need is a rich pop of colour. For these newlyweds, it took the form of burgundy floral elements. The bride looked stunning in her bridal gowns, especially the long-sleeved, short-skirted dress. Of course, what brought it all together was the vibrant joy at the celebration – thank you, The Wedding Barn Gallery, for these photos!
Ted: “It all went by in a flash but we really enjoyed every part of the wedding. Seeing some of our guests dancing to the live band and everyone interacting with each other – that’s exactly what we wished to achieve!”
Pwen: “I had planned a surprise dance performance for Ted together with a few of my girlfriends. It was pretty hard for me to get this past him for months without him catching on to this sneaky plan. I had to lie to him whenever I went to practice. On the actual day, we had a rehearsal in the reception hall and my other friends tried to detain him at the villa but failed as Ted insisted on checking the setup in the hall. When Ted was reaching the hall, we freaked out and yelled, ‘He’s here!’ We stopped, turned off the music, took off our dancing shoes and played Pretend. We’re lucky he didn’t find out as he was too focused on the setup in the garden and my friends managed to push him away. Phew!”
Ted: “I was surprised and amazed by their dance, but while Pwen was calming herself down after the dance, my groomsmen pulled a chair and got her seated. The music for Pwen’s dance was still playing, but this time my groomsmen and I danced in front of her in return!”
Pwen: “The best part was having family and close friends with us to celebrate our union. We had quite a number of guests fly in from overseas and it was a blessing to have everyone with us. Everything went smoothly, thanks to our selfless family and friends who handled everything in the background to make sure we had the best day ever.
“Ted was very accommodating and allowed me to plan the wedding however I liked! I’ve always wanted our wedding to be rustic and chill. Janda Baik – a quiet spot surrounded by nature and with a peaceful ambience – was exactly what I wanted. I fell in love instantly when I first visited the venue in person. There was no hard and fast theme, we went with a colour palette of light grey, cream and a pop of burgundy.”
Ted: “Wedding planning wasn’t easy without a wedding planner. Pwen was the creative mind behind the wedding and she put everything together, from the programme, décor, flowers and logistics to the menu and coordination. We were blessed to have our families and good friends help us.”
Pwen: “There were some hiccups a few days before the big day – we decided to DIY the décor with the help of a few of our closest friends! The adrenaline rush was real! Our friends sourced the fresh flowers a few days before the wedding, arranged the logistics, and came up with the wedding décor plan. None of us had done wedding décor before but we made it and everything turned out beautifully.”
Ted: “We were very hands-on because we wanted to personalise our wedding as much as possible. We had help from our friends with the invitation cards, programme booklet, place cards and personalised drawings for the bridesmaids and calligraphy hangers. Pwen’s godfather built the solemnisation arch and her sister DIYed the wedding favours, which were cookies and coffee. Pwen also handmade the vow book and she even printed colouring sheets for the children to keep them entertained. It was fun albeit tiring, and the process gave us precious memories.”
Tips from the bride: “Always be honest and open with each other. Ted and I constantly discussed our expectations, our parents’ expectations, and the budget we were comfortable with spending. That laid the groundwork for a few key decisions. Always learn to give and take. What’s important is the moment where you promise yourselves to each other, and the life you live after.”
